koha kai for our people
We believe that flourishing communities are well-fed communities, and that everyone should have access to quality food that supports and enhances their wellbeing.
Te Awa Kairangi Kai Collective provides emergency food support for those experiencing hardship in the here and now, while at the same time growing strength and stability for our future by working collaboratively within the wider food movement.
Our Collective develops strategies to link our emergency food provision practices to the growing food resilience and climate adaptation work that is happening across the Valley. We are guided by the values of manaakitanga and kotahitanga as we work to ensure that there is accessible and sustainable food for everyone within Te Awa Kairangi for generations to come.
the power of community
Te Awa Kairangi Kai Collective came together during Aotearoa's 2021 lockdown to coordinate the provision of emergency kai parcels to people in our communities. By working together, Te Awa Kairangi community food banks and pātaka were able to pool resources and get the food to where it was needed - to whānau and families across the valley.
Over 2022 Te Awa Kairangi Kai Collective has continued to provide essential food support to people in our communities who are doing it tough. As we continue to see impacts from the pandemic and deepening cost-of-living crisis, more and more of our community members are finding themselves unable to put food on the table.
Over the last six months our Collective members have provided over 12,000 kai parcels to thousands of households across the region. Our Collective works together to source fresh fruit and vegetables alongside pantry staples for our kai parcels, so that our friends and whānau are able to create nourishing meals from what we provide.
